Necessary Technical Skills

I've never taken online classes before. What computer skills will I need?

It can be intimidating to enter any situation without first feeling comfortable using the tools and materials provided. Most prospective students new to distance learning want to know more about the technical requirements of online programs.

Colleges and universities have developed their distance learning programs to be accessible and user-friendly. The focus for professors and faculty is to have students spend their time learning the course material rather than troubleshooting.

It may be worthwhile to review your general knowledge of computers and the World Wide Web. For example, know the meaning of different words and acronyms, such as: "search engine," "browser," "download," "PDF," and "toolbar." It is becoming commonplace for institutions to send students the software necessary to complete the required courses.

"AMU understands this and has accommodated my schedule any time I need them to do so—they are great."

Read about the experience of this 57-year-old husband and father of four who is earning his master's degree online in disaster and emergency management.
