The Nursing Shortage in America |
There is a well-known nursing shortage in America that, unfortunately, is expected to grow as the baby boomer generation ages and life expectancy continues to lengthen. What's causing the shortage, what are its consequences, and what is the outlook for job growth in this sector?
The main reasons cited for the shortage are:
- Not enough people are enrolling in nursing school to meet anticipated future need
- Not enough faculty teaching nursing, which restricts enrollment
- Lack of fellow nurses causes overwork for many nurses, creating higher stress levels and,
ultimately, higher turnover
The good news is that in February 2009, in the midst of recession woes, while
the country eliminated 681,000 jobs elsewhere, 27,000 jobs were created
in the health care sector. There are also legislative efforts in motion to provide funds for the training of more nurses and nursing faculty.
Become part of this burgeoning field and benefit from its sustained growth. There are well over a dozen health-related degrees you can obtain online, including nursing. See them below.
