Online University Highlight of the Week

Distance Learning & the Military

How can I tell which online schools are military friendly?

The military has contributed to the development of distance learning programs for many decades. Unfortunately, not all distance learning programs are flexible enough for members of the military. When evaluating different schools and degree programs, there are ways to determine how accommodating an academic program will be for members of the military. One tip is to see if an academic institution is a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Consortium.

For current and prospective students, the SOC recognizes colleges and universities for their commitment to providing flexible programs for members of the military. Members of the SOC are evaluated and must meet specific criteria before being accepted (e.g. to be a member of the SOC, an institution must be accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education).

If you are a member of the military and interested in enrolling in an online degree program, an association with the SOC is a great way of determining the flexibility of certain colleges and universities.
