Psychology & Counseling Degrees

Is there a difference between psychology and counseling degrees?

Though these two fields overlap, there are different career paths that you could take if you study either psychology or counseling.

Counseling degree programs typically focus more on determining what human services are needed, how to initiate and manage the programs designed to ensure well-being as it pertains to mental health. Counselors usually work within institutional settings (schools, hospitals, centers providing rehabilitation services).

Psychology degree programs tend to focus more on research and the practice of different therapy methods. This field deals with understanding how the mind copes with everyday stimuli, and how trauma affects human behavior. Most practicing psychologists have their PhD and work with patients on an individual level. The University of Phoenix offers associate's level psychology degrees and individual courses online for students interested in getting started in the field.
