Types of Online Courses — News for the Week of February 18th, 2008

Online University Highlight of the Week

Bellevue University

Founded over 40 years ago, Bellevue University has always been committed to higher education for adult learners and has been offering online degree programs since 1996. In fact, Bellevue was one of the first to provide students with the opportunity to earn their degree over the Internet.

Bellevue University is regionally accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS), and offers bachelor's and master's degree programs in the online format. Below is just a partial list of the degree programs that Belleuve offers in the online format

Self-paced and Asynchronous Courses: What are they?

If a college or university offers online courses, they typically offer either self-paced or asynchronous courses. Both allow you to study whenever you want. Both allow you to study whenever you want (so long as you have access to a computer and the Internet).

The difference between self-paced courses and asynchronous courses is how quickly you progress through your lessons. If you are taking a self-paced course, you are provided all the materials and work through your lessons as quickly or as slowly as you'd like. Most schools require that you complete a self-paced course within six to nine months of enrolling.

If you are taking an asynchronous course, you usually have deadlines for your assignments and projects. Most schools require that you post your assignments weekly. It it harder to ignore your homework when you know that it's due at the end of the week!

If you haven't already, spend some time looking at what degree subjects might interest you. By knowing what kinds of course you'd like to take, it will make the search a lot easier. Good luck!

Online Student Interview: Don

"Working in law enforcement is a 24/7/365 job … It would be impossible for me to maintain my job and go to school on campus."

Don has to be available anytime, day or night, as a law enforcement professional. Night school didn't work for him, but he wanted to advance in his field. Online courses allowed him to earn his degree.

"I looked at the bachelors only as a means to earning my masters … Once I decided where I wanted to end up, I started building a plan on how to get there."

"Without the ability to earn my degree via distance learning, I don't think I could have done it."

Read about the experience of this 28 year-old who is striking a balance between work and school.
